One of the most successful helicopter ever built, the Sea King has served in large numbrs around the world since its service debut with the U.S Navy in 1961. Designed by Sikorsky in America as the S-61/SH-3 Series, the Westland Sea King is a licence built development powered by Rolls-Royce engines, and initially delivered to the Royal Navy as the HAS.Mk.1 anti-submarine helicopter.The aircraft had been upgraded over the years and in 1988 the Royal Navy was looking for a replacement for the Wessex HU Mk.1 in the search and rescue role. The simple answer came in removing the anti-submarine equipment from the HAS Mk.5 but retaining the Super Searcher radar.
